BROADCAST MEDIA ARTS SCHOLARSHIPS

Specs Howard Alumni & Family Scholarship

The Specs Howard School is pleased to offer a scholarship for Specs Howard Alumni and their family. This was created to provide a $5,000.00 scholarship for a Specs Howard School graduate or a $2,000 scholarship for a Specs Howard School graduate’s family member (including stepfamily, children, spouse, brother, sister, or parent) who enrolls in any of the Specs Howard School programs: Broadcast Media Arts, Digital Media Arts or Graphic Design.

To be eligible for the scholarship, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Scholarship applicants must first pass all applicable entrance exams prior to completing the scholarship application.
  • The $5,000 Alumni Scholarship is open to all graduates of any Specs Howard School program.
  • The $2,000 Family Scholarship is limited to an immediate family member of a Specs Howard School graduate (including stepfamily, child, spouse, brother, sister, and/or parent). Verification of the relationship to the graduate may be required. The Admissions Department may request documentation, depending upon the relationship.
  • Graduation from the Specs Howard School will be verified by the Specs Howard School Registrar.
  • Recipients will receive written documentation from the Specs Howard School, acknowledging scholarship approval.
  • Upon being awarded a scholarship, recipients must contact the Specs Howard School within 30 days to be able to redeem the scholarship.
  • The scholarship must be used for enrollment at the Specs Howard School within three months of the date the scholarship was awarded.
  • The Specs Howard Alumni Scholarship is valued at $5,000 and the Specs Howard Family Scholarship is valued at $2,000, and will be used for tuition purposes only. The scholarships have no redeemable cash value and cannot be sold, transferred, or applied to any other costs. The scholarship funds will be incrementally credited to the student’s account at the beginning of each of the three semesters within the program. Each increment will equal one-third of the total value of the scholarship. Any interruption of training, change of program or withdrawal may result in the revocation of the scholarship award. The student also understands that a change of status may impact eligibility.
  • Recipients are subject to all policies and procedures, as published in the Specs Howard School Catalog and Student Handbook, including, but not limited to, grades, attendance and behavior.

Recipients of this scholarship are not eligible for any other Specs Howard School scholarship, including the Imagine America Scholarship.

This scholarship does not apply to currently enrolled, attending, transfer or reinstated students.

A limited number of scholarships are available each year, and will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.

Specs Howard High School Broadcast Media Arts Scholarship

Annually, the Specs Howard School of Media Arts offers three scholarships for the Broadcast Media Arts (BMA) program:

  1. First Place: Full Scholarship of $16,900 for the BMA Program
  2. Second Place: Partial Scholarship of $8450 for the BMA Program
  3. Third Place: Partial Scholarship of $4225 for the BMA Program

The annual competition starts in December of each school year, and the testing dates are published on the Specs Howard School website approximately one month before the testing begins.

The following are the terms and eligibility requirements for the scholarship:

  • The student must be a high school senior at the time of the test, and must specify that they are interested in the Broadcast Media Arts program on the day of the test.
  • The student may not compete in more than one high school scholarship competition.
  • Eligible students must take the CPAT Exam at the Specs Howard School on one of the three available testing dates in order to enter the scholarship competition. Testing dates are published on the Specs Howard School website approximately one month before the testing begins.
  • Candidates with the top 10 scores on the CPAT exam from all three testing dates combined will be selected as finalists. Finalists will be notified and invited to the school to write an essay and meet with a panel of judges from the industry. The total scores of the three-part competition will then be calculated (Scoring: 20% CPAT, 20% essay, 60% interview), and the ten finalists will be ranked in order, the top three being awarded scholarships.
  • Recipients will receive written documentation from the Specs Howard School acknowledging scholarship approval.
  • Upon being awarded a scholarship, recipients must contact the Admissions Department at the Specs Howard School within 30 days in order to redeem the scholarship.
  • Specs Howard School High School Scholarships must be used for enrollment within 12 months of the date of the recipient’s high school graduation.
  • Recipients will be required to meet the Specs Howard School standard entrance requirements or the scholarship will be invalid.
  • The Specs Howard School will attempt to place recipients in the class of their choice; however, the school reserves the right to select a specific class start date.
  • First Place in the Specs Howard High School Broadcast Media Arts Scholarship is valued at $16,900, second place is valued at $8,450 and third place is valued at $4,225. These scholarships are to be used for tuition purposes only, have no redeemable cash value and cannot be sold, transferred or applied to any other costs. Specs Howard High School Academic Scholarship

The Specs Howard High School Academic Scholarship is awarded to three high school seniors who demonstrate high academic achievement. This $3,000 scholarship was created to provide high school seniors assistance toward the tuition of any of the three programs offered at the Specs Howard School: Broadcast Media Arts, Digital Media Arts or Graphic Design.

The following are the terms and eligibility requirements for the scholarship:

  • Applicant must be a high school senior with a cumulative GPA of 3.7 or better.
  • Applicant must receive a score of 20 or better on the ACT or 1500 on the SAT.
  • A copy of the applicant’s high school transcript must be submitted for verification of GPA and ACT or SAT results.
  • Deadline for the submission of an application for the Specs Howard High School Academic Scholarship is June 30th of each year.
  • Recipients will receive written documentation from the Specs Howard School acknowledging scholarship approval. Upon being awarded a scholarship, recipients must contact the Specs Howard School within 30 days to be able to redeem the scholarship.
  • The scholarship must be used for enrollment at the Specs Howard School within 3 months of the date the scholarship was awarded.
  • The Specs Howard School will attempt to place recipients in the class of their choice; however, the school reserves the right to select a specific class start date.

Imagine America Scholarship

Annually, the Imagine America Foundation (IAF), an affiliate of the Association of Private Sector Colleges and Universities (APSCU), offers $1,000 scholarships to qualified high school seniors.

An applicant must be a high school senior who has been selected by a high school counselor or principal. All U.S. high schools are eligible to select up to five graduating seniors to receive the scholarship each year. Specs Howard Broadcast Media Industry Scholarship

The Specs Howard School of Media Arts offers a $500 scholarship toward the tuition cost of the Broadcast Media Arts (BMA) program to individuals who have an immediate family member currently employed in the radio and television industry.

The following are the terms and eligibility requirements for the scholarship:

  • Applicants must have a family member (mother, father, sister, brother, grandparent, aunt, uncle, first cousin, spouse, and/or children) currently employed in the radio and/or television industry. Prior to class start, applicants must supply written proof of employment from the relative on his or her employer’s company letterhead, as well as written proof of the nature of the relative’s relationship to the applicant.
  • Recipients will receive written documentation from the Specs Howard School acknowledging scholarship approval.
  • Upon being awarded a scholarship, recipients must contact the Specs Howard School within 30 days to be able to redeem the scholarship.
  • The scholarship must be used for enrollment at the Specs Howard School within 3 months of the date the scholarship is awarded.
  • Recipients will be required to meet the Specs Howard School standard entrance requirements or the scholarship will be invalid.

Specs Howard Veterans Scholarship

The Specs Howard School of Media Arts is proud to offer a scholarship for our military veterans, their dependents, survivors and military reservists. This $4,000 scholarship was created to provide assistance to veterans who will not receive Veteran’s Administration (VA) benefits while attending the Specs Howard School. The scholarship may be used toward the tuition of any of the three programs offered at the Specs Howard School: Broadcast Media Arts, Digital Media Arts or Graphic Design.

The following are the terms and eligibility requirements for the scholarship:

  • Scholarship applicants must first pass all applicable Specs Howard entrance exams, prior to completing the scholarship application.
  • Military verification will be required. Official discharge documentation must be supplied with the application for verification, unless on active duty. Active duty veterans will need to provide military transcripts for verification.
  • Candidates cannot receive regular Veteran’s Administration (VA) benefits while attending the Specs Howard School unless they are eligible under Chapter 31 of the VA benefits. Chapter 31-approved veterans are not eligible for the Specs Howard Veterans Scholarship.
  • Recipients will receive written documentation from the Specs Howard School acknowledging scholarship approval.
  • Upon being awarded a scholarship, recipients must contact Specs Howard School within 30 days to be able to redeem the scholarship.
  • The scholarship must be used for enrollment at the Specs Howard School within 3 months of the date the scholarship is awarded.
  • The Specs Howard School will attempt to put recipients in the class of their choice; however, the school reserves the right to select a specific class start date.

The Specs Howard School of Media Arts offers a $2,000 need-based scholarship toward the tuition cost of any of the three programs offered at the Specs Howard School (Broadcast Media Arts, Digital Media Arts or Graphic Design), to individuals who, after having met with the Financial Aid Department of the school, have an unmet need for additional funding for tuition.

The following are the terms and eligibility requirements for the scholarship:

  • Eligible students must be classified as an independent student by the Specs Howard School Financial Aid Department, or as a dependent student whose parent or parents have been denied a Federal PLUS Loan. The classification for an independent or dependent student will be determined using federal government regulations.
  • Eligible students must have their financial aid calculated, and be determined to have an unmet need of at least $1,800 toward the tuition cost of their program of choice at the Specs Howard School.
  • Recipients will receive written documentation from the Specs Howard School acknowledging scholarship approval.
  • Upon being awarded a scholarship, recipients must enroll at Specs Howard School within 30 days to be able to redeem the scholarship.
  • Recipients will be required to meet the Specs Howard School standard entrance requirements or the scholarship will be invalid.

Specs Howard Broadcast Media Preparatory Scholarship

The Specs Howard School of Media Arts offers a $3,500 scholarship to high school seniors that have been recommended by an instructor from a pre-approved, comprehensive radio and/or television program. Scholarships are available only to graduates of high schools that have been approved by the Specs Howard School. A list of approved schools may be obtained from the Director of Admissions or an Admissions Advisor at the Specs Howard School. Call (248) 358-9000 for more information.

The following are the terms and eligibility requirements for the scholarship:

  • Candidates for the scholarship must be recommended by a teacher or counselor at an approved high school. A letter of recommendation is required from a teacher or counselor on the approved high school’s letterhead.
  • Recipients will receive written documentation from the Specs Howard School acknowledging scholarship approval.
  • The recipient must contact the Admissions Department at the Specs Howard School within 30 days in order to redeem the scholarship
  • Scholarships must be used for enrollment immediately following the student’s high school graduation.

Michigan Student Film & Video Festival (DAFT) Scholarship

Annually, DAFT (Digital Arts, Film and Television) awards a full scholarship for the Broadcast Media Arts (BMA) program at Specs Howard School. Only high school seniors are eligible, and through a selection process, student film and video presentations are shown each year at the Michigan Student Film and Video Festival.

The following is a list of rules set forth by the Specs Howard School of Media Arts for scholarships that are awarded by a third party, such as DAFT:

Conclave Radio Industry Scholarship

Annually, the Upper Midwest Communications Conclave awards a full scholarship for the Broadcast Media Arts (BMA) program at the Specs Howard School. Contest rules are available at theconclave.com/scholarships. Applicants must be either a high school senior, a high school graduate, or a GED holder wishing to pursue any area of radio broadcasting. An application (available online) must be completed and submitted along with an audio recording of the candidate reading a script supplied by the Conclave.

The following is a list of rules set forth by the Specs Howard School of Media Arts for scholarships that are awarded by a third party, such as the Upper Midwest Communications Conclave (the Conclave).
