RADIO, VIDEO & FILM PROGRAM
Single Concentration
The Radio, Video & Film (RVF) Single Concentration Program is an 8-month program that provides students with an introduction to the skills and employment opportunities available to an entry-level employee in radio, television, video and film. Production skills, equipment operation, performance and related functions are studied and practiced through a combination of class lectures and hands-on exercises in our radio and television studios.
All students are exposed to both radio and video & film in the first 16 weeks of the program, but before entering the third marking period, students must choose an area of concentration, either radio or video & film. The purpose of selecting an area of concentration is to allow the student to practice and apply the knowledge that is learned in the first two marking periods toward a more focused experience in the student’s area of interest. The area of concentration will be reflected on the student’s diploma upon graduation from the program.
Concentration in Radio:
Students who elect a concentration in radio work on radio show preparation and performance, radio production, digital editing, commercial copywriting techniques, and work at the school’s radio stations in on-air and off-air capacities.
During the fourth marking period, the duties performed by students with a concentration in radio include:
- On-air announcing and board operation;
- On-air delivery of news, sports, weather and appropriate features;
- Writing and re-writing news stories for broadcast;
- Production work.
Concentration in Video & Film:
Students who elect a concentration in video & film practice various aspects of video production, including electronic newsgathering, equipment operation, studio operation, non-linear editing, graphics, on-camera performance and scene production utilizing film-style techniques.
During the fourth marking period, the duties performed by students with a concentration in video & film include:
- Working as part of a television production team to create magazine-style news programs;
- Transforming scripts into magazine-style news and scene productions;
- Editing program material using non-linear editing stations;
- Working with multiple software programs to create video effects and graphics.

Specs Howard School cannot guarantee any job to any graduate, but our Career Services Department works to help each graduate attain employment. The ultimate responsibility for obtaining employment rests with the Specs Howard School graduate.
